FamilyAid Boston Marathon Team

Running to end family homelessness

We are proud to be a member of the John Hancock Marathon Non-Profit Program again in 2019!

This year we have 10 runners on our Boston Marathon team. They come from 4 states and various professional backgrounds. For some, this is their first marathon, for others this is their 33rd. What unites them all is the belief that every family deserves a safe, stable home. We hope you’ll join us in cheering on the team on April 15th!

If you're interested in donating to our Marathon team or one of our runners you can visit our Crowdrise page.

Why did you choose to run for FamilyAid Boston?
I have personally experienced homelessness as a refugee.  I have witnessed a loved one struggle with homelessness and its rippling effect on families.  I am running for FamilyAid Boston because 90 cents of every dollar goes directly to help homeless parents and children reaffirms FAB's commitment to be a sustainable solution.

What is the one thing that has gotten you through training so far?
Many, many layers of clothes.  Growing up in Ashland the Boston Marathon was a big part of my childhood.  I never thought I would run it and now every time I walk out the door to go for a run I have to pinch myself.
Why did you choose to run for FamilyAid Boston?
I was looking for someone to give me a chance and FamilyAid did just that.  Now I'm going to make sure that I exceed my goal so they can use the funds raised to help families in need.

What is the one thing that has gotten you through training so far?
Often when I'm training, I envision my first sight of the Citgo sign, being so close to running into my loved ones' arms at the finish line. The sense of Boston Strong pride that our city exudes is unlike anything I've ever felt or experienced before. It's a truly magical and emotional experience.
Why did you choose to run for FamilyAid Boston?
I am honored and humbled to be running for such a powerful organization. FamilyAid Boston does so many wonderful things to help end homelessness throughout our city. Working as a Speech-Language Pathologist in early intervention, I see firsthand how important a stable, secure living situation is. A young child's brain is malleable, being molded and shaped by their environment. Adding stress,  unpredictability, and fear into the mix can do a lot of harm in a child's overall development. Children should not have to worry where their next hot meal is coming from or whether or not they will have a safe place to rest their head at night. FamilyAid Boston helps secure safety and predictability into these family's lives; giving these parents a second chance and allowing a child to grow, prosper, develop, and to do their most important job- be a kid!

What is the one thing that has gotten you through training so far?
I have recently moved to NYC. I live near Thompson Square Park and every Saturday morning families line up at the park to receive food and goods. This empowers me as a I start my long run.
Why did you choose to run for FamilyAid Boston?
I have always believed that everyone deserves a fair or an equal chance to pursue opportunities in their lives. However, even with the best of intentions, the ideas behind equality and fairness often do not translate into the world of ending homelessness. This is why I am passionate about an “equity-based” approach. Equity means providing people with the access, tools, and community supports they need to be stable in their housing. This is exactly what FamilyAid provides!

Why did you choose to run for FamilyAid Boston?
The issue of homelessness is a personal one for me and I'm passionate about ending it. Running for FamilyAid in 2018, I met the staff, learned more about the families they serve, as well as their approach to tackling family homelessness. I decided to run for FamilyAid again because I firmly believe in the work that they do and I'm confident the funds I raise will have an impact.

Why did you choose to run for FamilyAid Boston?
I chose to run for FamilyAid Boston because I am a dedicated elementary school teacher and see the hardships that children and their families face when struggling with homelessness. I always want to be a role model for my students and strive to instill positive examples. I am constantly and continually teaching my students about facing obstacles and overcoming challenges. Being apart of the FamilyAid Boston team is allowing me to model this for my students and demonstrate the importance of both perseverance and teamwork!
