In partnership with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, FamilyAid Boston provides shelter to 876 parents and children throughout Boston.

Our Community Based Shelter program provides families experiencing homelessness with safe, supportive shelter. Shelter units are located in neighborhood settings, providing families with access to jobs, schools, and resources within their own communities while they work to build the independence and skills they will need to sustain permanent housing.

Each family in the program receives individualized case management including counseling; guidance on budgeting, employment, housing search; and accessing resources such as healthcare and childcare. Case managers work with families to identify the issues that led them to lose housing and address the barriers they face as they work to return to permanent housing.

In order to help families maintain and build on the positive changes they make during their time in shelter, the Community Based Shelter program also provides post-shelter support services to families after they have returned to permanent housing.

To qualify for Community Based Shelter, families must meet Massachusetts Emergency Assistance (EA) shelter eligibility requirements and be referred by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). Please call DHCD at 617-573-1100 if you are in need of shelter.

If you are a Boston resident in need of shelter and you do not meet EA shelter eligibility requirements, please call 311 to determine if you qualify for other resources.
