Ten years later, this former homeless family is thriving
In 2012, Guadalupe and her family were facing unexpected challenges. Unable to work due to forced bed rest during her pregnancy, Guadalupe was struggling to pay rent and utilities for her family. Eight-year-old Roxy and 4-year-old Liam needed after school care and daycare, and turning to family or friends for help was not an option. “Bed rest” wasn’t very restful, and her baby’s health was in danger.
Weeks later, Guadalupe and her children were evicted. The family had to leave most of their belongings as there was no money for movers, and Guadalupe was physically unable to move them. The stress and worry were overwhelming.
After moving into a motel, Guadalupe went for a regular check-up with her obstetrician and asked for help. She told the doctor that she was behind on rent because of being out of work and needed a place for her soon-to-be family of four to live safely and securely. The family was referred to FamilyAid, where a skilled, knowledgeable, and compassionate case manager and housing specialist team moved quickly to help the family. They secured an affordable apartment and connected Guadalupe to daycare and infant support as well as furniture and utility support for their new home.
Five months later, Guadalupe, Roxy, and Liam visited their new apartment for the first time. Opening the door to a clean and comfortable apartment brought the children to tears. They bounced from room to room, describing the games they would play and crafts they would create in their new home.
“Our social services staff worked with Guadalupe and her children to secure permanent housing and also support services tailored to their individual needs,” says Mikayla Francois, FamilyAid’s director of housing and prevention services. “Once they moved in, I saw immediate positive changes in the family. Guadalupe was able to focus on the needs of her children and herself, and soon celebrated the safe and healthy birth of her third child, Robin.”
Over the years, Guadalupe has stayed in touch with FamilyAid. The family overcame persistent medical issues and worked hard to retain their apartment. Daycare and after school support allowed Guadalupe to go back to school and earn her teaching license.
Today, Roxy and Liam are in their teens, Robin is 10, and Guadalupe is a full-time teacher at a local school. The family enjoys exploring the city together and trying new things. They say they will be forever grateful for FamilyAid’s support during their most challenging moments.
