POVERTY AND HOUSING INSTABILITY ARE DEVASTATING
In the City of Boston, as many as 5,000 children wake up each day unsure of where they will spend the next night. Instead of concentrating on school, friends, sports and clubs, homeless children worry about where they will sleep. The negative impacts on their health and education last a lifetime.
THE CHALLENGE
We know parenting is hard enough in ideal circumstances. Imagine using all your energy towards keeping a roof, any roof, over the heads of your children. Your health begins to suffer, your job performance drops and you don’t have the time or energy to be there for your children in the way they need.
There are thousands of homeless families in Boston and thousands more living on the brink. The economic tightrope struggling families walk is long, and just one thing can knock them off: a lack of affordable housing or child care, fewer work hours, an accident, domestic violence or illness.
