A Family Finds Hope Against All Odds
When Georgie, 7, Xavi, 11, and their mom, Joslyn, arrived at FamilyAid’s doorstep in October, they were at their lowest. Having been evicted from a one-bedroom apartment that they shared with another family, the family was displaced from their neighborhood, school and community supports. Joslyn was unemployed and grappling with depression and anxiety.
FamilyAid staff quickly provided temporary housing for the family and began the hard work of helping each family member build back their hopes, dreams and stability.
FamilyAid case managers Alexa and Judith worked daily with the family, enrolling Jocelyn’s sons in a nearby school and weekly swimming lessons, which brought a sense of normalcy as the boys settled into their temporary housing and neighborhood. At the same time, they helped Joslyn get the therapeutic support she needed, began a search for an affordable place to live and helped Joslyn get her finances in order.
Thanks to a generous FamilyAid donor, the family was enrolled in the Above the Clouds weekend flight program to raise their spirits even further. For Xavi, the opportunity was a literal dream as he plans to become a pilot when he grows up. Together, these supports and resources gave the boys and Joslyn hope and encouragement that things were looking up.
With FamilyAid’s help, Georgie, Xavi and Joslyn finally moved into a permanent, affordable apartment in June, just nine months after coming to FamilyAid. The stability of their own home has brought additional improvements to their lives. With assistance from FamilyAid service navigators, the boys are enrolled in a summer camp, giving Joslyn the time she needs to go back to school, as she always dreamed, and secure a steady job. Joslyn reports she and her sons are now happy and healthy.
Once burdened by overwhelming odds against them, the family is now flourishing with a brighter path toward the future.
