Pieris Pharmaceuticals Surprises FamilyAid Kids with Birthday Parties

When James moved into the shelter, his mom was worried he’d never have another birthday party, but James had one of the greatest birthday parties of all time thanks to our generous supporters.

Six-year-old James and his mom Ashley arrived at a FamilyAid’s emergency shelter in January with only a plastic bag filled with blankets and one teddy bear.  The family was referred to the agency through their Boston Children’s Hospital pediatrician after Ashley shared that they had been evicted from their apartment.  Ashley often missed work as a CNA to make James multiple appointments due to ongoing medical issues.  She had used up all her sick time, and her employer decided to release her.

With no income, bills already piled up, and evicted from their apartment, Ashley and James turned to FamilyAid for temporary shelter and help finding a new apartment.  A birthday party was the last thing on Ashley’s mind.  However, James was excited to soon be turning six, constantly telling his mom he couldn’t wait to go to second grade and learn more math.  So, his first comment when he walked through the door to the FamilyAid shelter was, “Where will I have my birthday party”?

Happily, their case manager told Ashely about ‘Birthday Party Kits’ donated by Pieris Pharmaceuticals as part of its affiliation with FamilyAid sponsor Life Science Cares.  Upon discovering the kits contained the makings for a birthday cake, party decorations, and a gift card, Ashley burst into tears of relief.  She wanted to do something special for James’ birthday but did not think she would ever be able to throw him a party.

“James was overjoyed for his party!  We had the kitchen decorated, a cake with his favorite color frosting, the toy he’s been asking for, and friends to celebrate with us.  It was a magical day, and we thank Pieris and FamilyAid for making this his best birthday yet!”

On March 31, James turned six!  Friends from the shelter celebrated with him and Ashley, eating cake that Ashley baked from the Birthday Party Kit and opening James’ gifts purchased with a thoughtful and generous gift card included in the kit.
