A Two-Generation Approach to Family Stability

Every child deserves to thrive. Every parent deserves the support to succeed.

FamilyAid is Greater Boston's two-generation solution to family success. We work side by side with children and parents facing housing instability and homelessness. Through long-term, two-generational wraparound supports, eviction and homelessness prevention services, temporary shelter and long-term housing search and placement, we address families’ needs and help them build lasting stability.

Building Better Futures

For more than a century, FamilyAid has been meeting families at the moment they need help most.

Founded in 1916 as Travelers Aid Society of Boston, the organization began with a simple belief: when families facing crisis are met with support, dignity and opportunity, their stories don’t end in hardship—they continue toward stability and hope.

Today, FamilyAid serves more than 5,000 children and parents each year across Greater Boston. This film reflects on FamilyAid’s 110-year legacy and the question that drives its work today: what happens after a family leaves FamilyAid’s care?

The Scale of the Crisis

Family homelessness in Greater Boston is a crisis, and it's getting worse

Massachusetts has the third-highest rate of family homelessness in the US. As federal and state safety nets continue to fray, more families are being pushed to the edge. Children pay the steepest price.

What We Do

Our Programs

FamilyAid’s nationally recognized 2Generation approach is rooted in the understanding that lasting change only happens when we invest in children and parents at the same time. Through prevention services that stop homelessness before it starts, supportive temporary housing and long-term 2Gen supports that address a whole family’s economic mobility, education and well-being, we help families build brighter, stronger futures.

One Family's Story
"Four months after living in a car under a bridge, Chloe and her four children are safe in a home of their own."

After fleeing an abusive husband with her four children—two with permanent disabilities—Chloe was turned away from state shelter because she had fallen behind on rent to cover food and medical bills. When FamilyAid found the family living in a car under a bridge, we stepped in with private support, legal advocacy and wraparound services. Four months later, Chloe and her children were safe in a home of their own.

Chloe and her kids are five of the more than 5,200 children and parents we supported last year. Read more of our family success stories below.
