From Crisis to a Home of Their Own
When Maria and her three daughters, 23-year-old Elena, 18-year-old Isabel and 13-year-old Sofia faced an unexpected housing crisis late last year, their future suddenly felt uncertain. Without a safe place to sleep or stay even for a single night, the family’s situation was urgent. As a single mother, Maria had always done everything she could to provide for her daughters, but in this moment, the family needed immediate help and guidance on their path back to stability.
Maria turned to Boston Public Schools for support and was referred to FamilyAid. With the guidance of her Case Manager, Mikayla, Maria applied for temporary shelter while also exploring longer-term solutions for permanent, stable housing. During this difficult transition, FamilyAid helped meet their most pressing needs: providing food, clothing and referrals to healthcare providers to ensure the family’s needs were covered.
Maria remained determined and hopeful throughout the process. Months later, her perseverance paid off. She was approved for a three-bedroom housing voucher through the Boston Housing Authority. Through it all, Mikayla and FamilyAid continued to stand by her side, securing financial support for the security deposit, moving costs and furnishings needed for Maria’s family to create a warm, welcoming home to call their own.
Today, Maria works at a local hair salon to provide for her family. Sofia and Isabel are both attending school, while Elena, who recently completed her studies, manages the household and is searching for a part-time job. The family is thriving in their new home and filled with gratitude for the support they received along the way. Their story is a powerful example of how resilience, community and timely support can help a family move from crisis to stability—and build a hopeful future together.
