Q&A with Luciano H. Ramos
Our new President & CEO, Luciano H. Ramos, is committed to ensuring every child and parent has the security and opportunity that come with a stable home. We wanted to help you get to know Luciano beyond his new role, so we asked him to share a little about his experiences, inspirations, and vision for the future.
What’s one thing you’ve learned about FamilyAid that impressed you immediately?
The people are truly incredible! From the families and staff to the board members and partners—everyone approaches this work with a tremendous amount of passion and love.
What should staff and supporters know about you?
I tend to operate with a great sense of urgency for action.
What personal experiences have shaped your commitment to helping families facing homelessness?
Despite my mother being a Licensed Practical Nurse, our family struggled with housing, food insecurity, and financial hardship throughout my childhood. By age 17, I had lived in 18 different homes, including periods when we stayed with friends because we had nowhere else to go. What carried us through was not only the love of family, but also the generosity of people who stepped in, many of whom I never met. Those experiences taught me that no one overcomes adversity alone and that strong communities are built when people support one another. Throughout those difficult years, we also did our best to help others whenever we could. I continue to serve because others once did the same for us and service has always been a core part of who I am.
Who’s someone you really admire?
My brother Richard. He sacrificed a lot to take care of me, and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for him.
What keeps you motivated and inspired to continue the work FamilyAid is doing every day?
Family. Chosen family, family by blood, and the family that comes together as a community to help one another.
What gives you hope when you think about the future of families in our community?
If there is one place in the world that can figure this out, it is Boston.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
It was a quote from Booker T. Washington that quite literally changed the way I approached the world as a young man. The quote, “I will permit no man to narrow or degrade my soul by making me hate him,” brought me tremendous peace and has served me well throughout my daily life.
How would you describe your leadership style?
Collaborative.
What’s a small thing that never fails to make your day better?
Morning hugs and goodnight kisses from my wife and kids.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Being around family and friends—usually cooking, eating, working out, hiking, kayaking, biking, listening to live music, playing games, doing and watching sports, going to museums, and exploring new places together.
