The negative impacts on their health and education last a lifetime.
In the City of Boston, as many as 5,000 children come to school each day not knowing where they will spend the night. Instead of concentrating on school, friends, sports, and clubs, homeless children worry about where they will sleep at night.
We know parenting is hard enough in ideal circumstances. Imagine using all your energy towards keeping a roof, any roof, over the heads of your children. Your health begins to suffer, your job performance drops, and you don’t have the time or energy to be there for your children in the way they need.
There are thousands of homeless families in Boston and thousands more living on the brink. The economic tightrope these families are walking is long, and just one thing can knock them off: a lack of affordable housing, an accident, domestic violence, or illness.
Stable housing is the foundation every child needs to thrive. They need our help to get there and ensure they stay there.
